Player Development Initiatives - Your resource for U.S. Soccer Federation mandated changes

by Alvaro Garcia-Velez | Sep 08, 2016

The world of youth soccer continues to develop. The U.S. Soccer Federation (USSF), which oversees all soccer organizations in the United States, has mandated several changes to youth soccer that will be implemented all over the country.

First, the changes affect players and team formation by aligning age groups with the calendar year rather than the school year. The Milwaukee Kickers implemented the age group change for U9 and U10 teams that play in the WYSA Youth Academy as well as all select teams U11 and older. We elected to continue to form our rec teams by grade in an effort to allow younger players the opportunity to continue to play with classmates.

Second, the new mandates standardize team size and field dimensions based on age groups. The benefits of Small-Sided Games for players include more fun, more touches on the ball and the ability to make more tactical decisions. This will allow players to learn different positions, tactics and increase fitness.

I have included the Player Development Initiatives for your review. Please take a minute to familiarize yourself with the upcoming changes.
