This past weekend, the 2015 WIAA State Boys Soccer Tournament took place at KOHLER Engines Stadium at Uihlein Soccer Park.
From Thursday to Saturday, 16 teams experienced the ultimate feeling in high school soccer; the chance to play in the state tournament. It was an opportunity for these players to showcase their talents in front of the largest and most energetic crowds of the year. Students from these schools were encouraged to come out and cheer on their classmates, and thus made up the majority of the fan base. Overall the atmosphere was contagious, and I was able to reflect on my experience at the event.
Although I never had the chance to participate in a state tournament game, I was very excited to be a part of the soccer packed weekend. I was able to witness the action on Thursday, when the Division 3 and Division 4 semifinals took place. Being in that atmosphere was indeed a privilege. It made me realize how special, not only soccer, but all high school athletics are. For some of the players, this was their last chance to leave an impression before moving on. For others, this may have just been the start of their high school athletic careers. Nonetheless, the environment of this tournament was enough to make any observer appreciate the importance of high school athletics.
With several different media outlets in attendance, the WIAA event provides a great opportunity each year for student athletes to be a part of something unique. Schools battle all season to gain one of the coveted 16 tournament spots. This year proved to be no exception, as the games produced some great outcomes that will be talked about for many years to come.
