Despite a solid effort from both our Major's and Reserve teams this past weekend, both fell in the WASA finals to the Croatian Soccer Club on Sunday, July 18 at Croatian Park.
The Kickers Reserve team lost 3-2 in a match that saw 3 quick goals by the Croatians within the first 20 minutes of play. Although the reserves regained control after the third, they were only able to cut the deficit by 2. Coach Sweeney credited the Croatian keeper with some "big saves" toward the end of the match in a hard fought battle.
The Kickers Major's game had a similar story as the team lost 3-0. The game was even until the last minute of the first half when the Croatians managed to sneak a shot past the Kickers keeper. The Majors came out of half determined to even the score and fared well for most of the second half but despite the opportunity to tie the match several times the play of the Croatian keeper was solid.
As the half went on, coach Sweeney elected to send players forward in an attempt to even the score. The Croatian's ceased the opportunity and make the Kickers pay scoring the second and third goal late in the game.
Despite the two losses, coach Sweeney was proud of his teams. He said, "It was a great season for both teams and to get to the finals in both leagues in the same year is a great accomplishment."
The Kicker's Majors and Reserves thank everyone for their support throughout the season and look forward to late August when both teams gear up for the fall season.
The Kickers hosted the WASA semi-final matches at Uihlein Soccer Park on Saturday, July 10.
The Kickers Reserve team beat the Bavarians 2-1 while the Major's beat the Milwaukee Sport Club team 3-2. With the wins, both teams took second place in the standings and have secured the #2 seeds in their respective playoff bracket.
Coach Sweeney was happy with the outcomes saying "both teams played well and were deserving winners against 2 very good teams, who we had split with during the regular season."
Both teams will be back in action this Sunday, July 18 at Croatian Park. The Kickers Reserves will play the winner of the Brewers/Croatian game to be played later this week at 12:30p while the Major's will take the field against the #1 seed Croatians at 3:30p.
Update 7/15/10
The Kickers Reserves will play the Croatian Reserves.
Majors
The Kickers Major's team had a big win vs. United Serbs yesterday, 2-1. Going into the game, the Serbs held 3rd place within league standings and gave the Majors their only loss in league play.
With the victory, the Major's remain in first place with 26 points. The team has already clinched a playoff birth [top 4 teams] and will continue the season with the goal of keeping a first place spot throughout league play.
U23
The Kickers U23 team lost in a tough battle with the Croatians, 2-1, in the U23 Cup - State Finals. The team had a number of opportunities and Coach Sweeney felt as if his team outplayed the Croatians most of the game. In the end, the Kickers came up short.
The Croatians scored the 'winner' with just under 2 minutes to play on a fumbled ball by the Kickers keeper that was gathered up and popped in for the go-ahead goal.
U23
The Kickers U23 team is scheduled to play in the State Finals of the U23 Cup this Saturday, May 22 vs Croatians at Croatian field. The game is set for 4:30pm.
The winner will advance to the Region 2 tournament in Chicago, June 19-20.
Reserve Team
The Reserve team won its last two games on Sunday versus the Croatians, 2-0 and last night at Uihlein versus WSC Tigers, 3-1. They completed the season with a 6-3 record, which at this time has them in first place with 18 points.
Majors
The Major's completed the fall season with a 4-1-2 record and is currently tied for first place with 14 points. The Major's team also defeated the Bavarians 3-1 in the Wisconsin State Finals fo rthe Open Cup. They will advance to the next round, which will be played sometime next spring (see Press Release below).
