Mohana's story

Mohanavalli “Mohana” Jayakumar-Raj of Milwaukee has come to realize the value of life.

That’s because when she was just 29, Mohana was diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML), a deadly cancer of the blood and bone marrow.

Last Memorial Day Weekend Mohana was feeling especially tired and fatigued. She thought it was due to a combination of work, chores at home and the responsibility of caring for a 4 year old boy; but that was not the case.   She went to the doctor and after they did some blood work her condition was discovered. Shortly after her diagnosis, Mohana was told she needed a marrow transplant.

Mohana’s sister and family were tested to see if they were a match but like 70 percent of transplant candidates, she did not have a related donor.

Mohana’s doctors turned to the Be The Match Registry to find an unrelated donor. A search of more than 13 million volunteer marrow donors and more than 290,000 donated cord blood units on global registries has so far failed to turn up a suitable match. That means she must wait until her match joins the registry.

While Mohana waits, she worries about her son and how to explain to a 4 year old what is happening to his mom. She wants to be a regular mom but she gets tired easily and there are times that she doesn’t even have the strength to pick up her son.

Thousands of patients like Mohana depend on the Be The Match Registry to find a donor who can give them the chance for a cure. You have the power to heal, the power to save a life. As part of the Milwaukee Kickers Soccer Marrowthon, take the first step. Join the registry.
