Going into the summer, I didn’t know what to expect as I started off my internship at the Milwaukee Kickers. I had never delved into the world of sports and how a sports-focused organization was run because it never piqued my interest. However being a soccer player in high school and watching games whenever I could on TV, I was optimistic about what the Milwaukee Kickers could teach me and the skills that I could use as I venture forward in my professional career.
Needless to say, the Kickers taught me a lot in a few short months. Watching and assisting at the WIAA Girls State Soccer Tournament gave me an example of learning to work with two groups to successfully host a major event. There were so many factors that went into those couple of days and making sure that there were enough volunteers to run the show. Being on the field during a couple of the games showed me first-hand how important the communication was between the announcer and scorer's table to track who was coming on and off the field. Beyond that, concessions were selling, tickets were being purchased, and parking was being organized simultaneously. It was an experience that was very valuable and I learned a lot from it.
When I look at my internship overall, in addition to the YouTube videos I created, I would say that "Soccer Stars" affected me the most. The soccer program serving some of Milwaukee's neediest children was something that I looked forward to every week as I assisted each school check-in. It is so important to give back to the community, especially to youth. We, as a team, were able to teach kids the importance of leadership and teamwork by having them play together and be active. Every time a kid was excited to play I couldn’t help but smile. At the end of the day the Kickers has taught me one big thing, learning to be selfless.
I had a great experience and came into contact with people that made it that much more wonderful. It was a short journey, but a great one and I hope to keep in touch with those I have met. I am very glad to have been a Milwaukee Kickers Intern!
