Jake Bawolek - MKSC Intern, Soccer Player, Sports Writer

by Jake Bawolek | Jun 07, 2016

I’m Jake Bawolek, one of four new faces in the Milwaukee Kickers Soccer Club intern program. While my title as marketing/special events intern for MKSC is new, the work environment appears quite familiar, thanks to the 14 years I have been involved in the sport of soccer.

Having begun in the peewee soccer leagues of Greenfield, WI, my experience playing soccer escalated over the years from recreational play in Richfield, WI to competitive play in Hartford, WI.  After over a decade’s worth of weekly practices, wild-weather games, exhausting tournaments - combined with thrilling victories, game-winning goals, and strong team bonds, is it fair to say that soccer is engrained in my life.

Ultimately, that passion for the sport brought me to MKSC, an organization with a mutual passion for the game of soccer.  Outside of personal experiences playing soccer at Uihlein Soccer Park, connecting myself to MKSC produced a suitable fit for other reasons.  Having discovered a talent for writing, I embarked on a three-year journey with my high school publication which ranked top in state among high schools.  During that time, I found myself writing strong articles, gathering information, selling newspaper advertisements, and designing newspaper pages as more than just an obligation; it was an interest.  When journalism faded out of my consideration of college majors, the interest and skills carried on in a different form.

Fast-forwarding to present day, I stand as a second-year student pursuing a marketing and communications major from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, with an emphasis on public relations.  Since age 17, I have written for, updated, managed, and marketed my own sports media website, InsideSportsReports.com.  Last year, my top article hit over 150,000 views, 200 comments, and three million social media impressions in just two days’ time.  Similar work experiences with the American Cancer Society, The Badger Herald, and other affiliations have built up a strong work background.

Starting out my next work endeavor, I am prepared to bring my skill set to MKSC, and am eager to exchange those skills for valuable work and enjoyable summer experiences.
