My name is Erin Sullivan and I am one of the Milwaukee Kickers Soccer Club Summer Interns. I am a senior at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee majoring in Journalism, Advertising and Media Studies with a concentration in Advertising and Public Relations. My whole life has revolved around sports (mainly soccer) in come capacity and I look forward to being able to continue my involvement through this internship.
Growing up, I constantly rotated between playing soccer, volleyball and basketball. Once I reached high school, scheduling became an issue and I had to give up playing volleyball competitively. I played soccer and basketball year-round for my high school, Pius XI, and for different select and AAU clubs in the area. My sophomore year I injured my knee during a basketball game and had to have surgery, which kept me out of play for 18 months. I ended up missing my junior year club soccer season and most of my high school basketball season as a result. Luckily, I was able to recover just in time to help my team win the WIAA Girls State Basketball Championship in 2010, which is one of my fondest memories of playing sports.
I went on to play soccer (goalkeeper) my freshman year at UWM but, due to further injuries, I decided to hang up my boots and take up coaching 6th and 7th AAU Girls Basketball for my old club. Coaching was a great experience for me. I enjoyed being able to still be around sports even if it meant I couldn’t play. The two years I coached taught me a lot. I was able to help my girls improve both as players and young women, and they helped me grow both as a coach and an adult. While I am no longer coaching at this point in my life, it is something I plan to take up again in the future. Sports have played such an integral role in my life and have helped make me the person I am today, so my goal is to be able to help give current players that same great experience I had growing up in any way that I can.
Family also plays a very important role in my life. When I’m not at school, working or playing sports for fun, you can find me hanging out with my three sisters: Casey (30), Moira (18) and Siobhan (16), who all played/play competitive sports as well. My family has been amazing in supporting me throughout my athletic career. From those long weekend tournaments to cheering me on in the rain (or snow), they have been there every step of the way.
I am excited to be part of the Milwaukee Kickers Soccer Club Team and look forward to learning more about what happens behind the scenes in order to create and sustain a successful organization.
